Organizational Leadership Coaching
"Only three things occur naturally in organizations: friction, confusion, and
underperformance. Everything else requires leadership."- Peter Drucker
So true! So we should invest in leadership training
right? Well- before you do that, let me suggest something that might sound a little
crazy:
True leadership is not a skill you can
learn.
True, there are lots of seminars and courses and books that would
beg to differ. Maybe you've even been to some and benefited from them. Most of these trainings
and books mean well, but until there is deep clarity within yourself, all the leadership skills you learn
just help you pretend to be a leader- and people can sniff out a pretend leader from a
real one and even you know when you're really just pretending to lead. And once there is
deep clarity within yourself- you won't need any leadership training- because you'll just naturally see what
others don't and know what needs to be done, what needs to be undone and what needs to be avoided. This
creates true and authentic leadership that people naturally respond to because they know it's not fake.
It also takes all of the anxiety and stress out of leading- because it doesn't feel like leading- it just
feels like doing what is obvious and natural. You are no longer trying to please or impress others, but
rather just serving them.
So, if leadership is not a
skill you can learn- what is it? Do
you have to be lucky enough to be born with it? Well my answer
is- YES you do, and YES you are lucky enough to have been born with
it (we all are).
True leadership is an INNATE QUALITY that naturally
and automatically expresses itself as you grow in clarity.
My goal in organizational coaching is to work with the leaders of
the organization and help them become more and more clear on what the organization is about, who it serves,
how it serves and what their roles are as leaders. I help them get and stay clear on
this vital question:
"What is the most
important thing I can work on today?"
This is a crucial question
for any leader to ask themselves, and keep asking themselves on a regular basis. But being really clear on the
answer is a rare thing because most don't make it a big enough priority to get and stay clear on that vital
question. Most get overwhelmed with reacting to the demands of others and stuck in the childhood trap of trying to
please others (or not displease them). The only difference is now instead of trying not to displease their
parents or teachers, they are trying to not displease their customers, their bosses, their co-workers, their
shareholders, or the media.
Those who do make it a big
enough priority to get and stay clear on this vital question are the ones who truly lead- and true leadership can't
help but get noticed and rewarded- because it is so rare. Rare- not
because only a few are born with the ability, but because so few make the commitment to ever increasing
clarity.
Your true legacy as a leader is how effective you are in assisting those you lead to
uncover their own innate leadership qualities.
The business or organization is the training ground for this
"great uncovering" both for you and for those you lead. My coaching just helps you get and stay clear
on this.
The benefits of accomplishing this are huge. The implications
are truly comprehensive in scope- both professionally and personally- and the number of lives that are
impacted for the better are immeasurable.
